In fact this robot vacuum is so good at cleaning that your upright vacuum might think you forgot about it.

Neato Botvac D7 Review – Cleaning

Right out of the box you can tell that the Neato Robotics D7 is ready to get busy. At 7.7 lbs and 13.2 inches wide it has the look and feel of a robotic tank built to conquer any floor it comes across.

The D shaped body has become a signature of Neato robot vacuums. This model has a nice brushed metal finish on top and a solid plastic bumper on front. When it does actually bump into something it does so quietly.

The Neato Robotics D7 has a huge 11” spiral combo brush that adds to its efficiency, as well as one spinning side brush for collecting dirt and dust along walls. Both brushes are easy to remove to clean or replace when needed.

It also has a large 700 ml (23 ounce) dust bin. It fills up faster than you might expect. The Neato Robotics D7 is just that good at removing debris and pet hair on any rug or floor type and transitions from one type to another smoothly.

For primary cleaning it has both an Eco and Turbo mode. Eco is slower and gentler (and quieter) while Turbo is the exact opposite. The battery can last for 2 hours on a single charge and cover 5000 square feet so large homes are no challenge.

Turbo is great if you’re entertaining and need a quick sweep of your living room. The Neato Robotics D7 will knock out that job while you move onto more important tasks. Like making snacks.

It also has manual steering and spot cleaning. If your latest Netflix binge left a pile of popcorn crumbs on the floor, you can simply drive your magic tank over to the mess, hit the spot button, and *poof* the mess is no more.

Neato Botvac D7 Review – Navigation

The navigation and software on the Neato Robotics D7 are what separate the “wows” from the “WOWs.” It’s also what separates the price tag.

The moment you turn on the D7 it starts laser mapping the environment. As it cleans it’s also collecting data to create a map of each wall and obstacle it finds. Every move it makes, every turn it takes, every time it brakes, sensors are mapping it. (Yes, yes I did)

It reminds me of mowing a nice flat lawn. The Neato Robotics D7 moves back and forth in straight lines. When it comes up to an object like a chair leg the D7 will work its way around it trying to cover every inch of floor with the main brush.

Neato BotvisionIf, after two hours and 5000 square feet, the job somehow isn’t finished, you should probably have maid services. Joking aside, the D7 will return to the charging dock to refuel and head back to finish the work.

The bread and butter of the unit is in the software. There are only so many ways to innovate a vacuum. The real potential is in intelligent navigation and mapping.

Once the Neato is finished cleaning and mapping a floor it provides a detailed map on the Neato app. You can then create “no go” areas on your floors like around pet food dishes or entertainment consoles.

Similar Priced Vacuums

If you don’t want the Neato Robotics D7 to clean an entire room you can just create a No Go zone at the door way and the robot vacuum will pass by. Options like these are what may one day make upright vacuums obsolete. One day…

The Neato app provides other functions like scheduling daily cleanings, providing data on cleaning days and times, sending notifications, and steering with manual controls. You can also integrate voice commands with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, IFTT, and Apple Watch.

Neato Botvac D7 Review – Summary

If you got the coin and are in the process of building a smart home, the Neato Robotics D7 is a must have piece of the puzzle. Straight vacuuming lines will satisfy even the hardiest OCDs and the Neato app gives you unprecedented control over its features. Neato is leading the way in robot vacuum technology. If the D7 is any indication of what’s to come, the future looks bright.
